Katie McGrath, the green-eyed Irish actress who plays Morgana in the popular medieval fantasy series Merlin, still can’t believe her luck. A few years ago, the 26-year-old quit her job as a fashion journalist to work as a wardrobe assistant on the set of the BBC series, The Tudors. With no experience in sewing hems or ironing shirts, she freely admits, “as a wardrobe girl, I make an excellent cup of tea”.

“It was the biggest farce ever because I had no idea about it,” McGrath says from London, admitting she’s so sick of the heat she’d gladly swap places with me.

“They figured that because I worked for a fashion magazine I could mend clothes. I would look at them and say, ‘Are you sure you want me to sew this? I’ll probably make it worse’.”

Princess Margaret Article

I found an interesting article about Princess Margaret. It mentions The Queen and Katie playing the young Margaret. It also says that episode 1, “Sisters,” which is the epsode with Katie, will air November 29. Emilia Fox plays Queen Elizabeth II in this episode. She will guest star next week on Merlin as Morgause!

The first episode, Sisters, starring Emila Fox as the Queen and Katie McGrath as Princess Margaret, will be broadcast on November 29 and portrays the events leading up to the Princess’ announcement that she would not marry Townsend.

How Merlin actress Katie McGrath stole the show

Pity the pretty young actress who makes a name for herself in the world of TV costume dramas. First there is all that corsetry. Then there is the realisation that no floaty dress you wear in real life will ever compare.

‘How am I ever going to find a wedding dress that can top this,’ wails Merlin actress Katie McGrath, with just a touch of melodrama, while swishing several metres of satin around her legs.

She has a point. The costumes in Merlin – the BBC’s Saturday evening drama – are pretty magical in themselves, all flowing robes and velvet. And that’s just the men.

SciFiChick.com Interview

Katie did an interview with SciFiChick.com. In the interview she talks about her character Morgana, filming, and hints about the upcoming season. She also talks about The Queen. You can read the full interview right here. She sounds like a very intelligent, humble person.

There would be days, especially at the start, when I would read the script and I would look at the scene and I’d go “I have no idea how to do this.” I had no idea how to make what they want in the scene happen. And I was lucky to have the most amazing co-stars and director to help me through it. And the start of season 2 is such a different feeling than starting season 1. I was so scared at the start. I didn’t know how I was going to bring it off. If you think about it, the character has already been played by Helen Mirren and Helena Bonham Carter. And then, I come along and think, “How am I going to do this mythical person justice?” So, I’m hopefully getting better. And I’m hopefully getting there. But time will tell, if I can pull it off.

Here is the excerpt about The Queen:

We just finished, at the same time, something for channel 4 about the Queen. It’s a 5-part drama on seminal points in the Queen’s reign. And I play Princess Margaret in the first episode, and the Princess Margaret – Peter Townsend affair that shocked the nation and unsettled the first few years of the Queen’s reign. So, it’s another princess, but she’s completely different. It was nice to play something different that was so far from what it is that I do on Merlin, so that I can really appreciate when I come back.

Katie McGrath happy to live in the Merlin bubble

Katie McGrath may now be one of the stars of the hit TV series “Merlin” but only a short while ago this Irish actress was working on the other side of the camera. Even though her dream was to work in fashion journalism, a short stint at a magazine in Ireland convinced her otherwise. Finding herself out of work, she accepted the job in wardrobe.

“Bearing in mind I can’t sew, I can’t do bloody anything, so I turn up on this huge production … and I get put to work and it was like baptism of fire, me lacing girls into corsets at 5 o’clock in the morning and I loved every second of it,” says McGrath.

But while she was working on the show, she was told by some of the directors, producers and actors that she should get on the other side of the camera. After landing a couple small parts and an appearance in “The Tudors” – including a very steamy scene with the show’s star Jonathan Rhys Meyers – she scored an audition for “Merlin.”

Katie’s Tattoo

I am late posting this, but the article is still interesting nonetheless. According to the Daily Mail, Katie has a tattoo on her back. The article also mentions her role as Margaret in the upcoming The Queen.

When Irish ingenue Katie McGrath plays a young Princess Margaret in Channel 4′s controversial five-part docu-drama The Queen this autumn, viewers will not be aware that she has a very unregal tattoo.

For the 26-year-old actress has the word ‘purity’ inked across the bottom of her back. Katie, who has a degree in history from Trinity College, Dublin, will appear in the first part of the series, which begins in 1955 when Margaret had to decide whether or not to marry her divorced lover Captain Peter Townsend.

The production has been beset by rumours that the Palace might yet seek an injunction amid fears that former royal aides have been secretly aiding and abetting the film-makers.

Katie and Colin at the Oxegen Festival

According to this article, Katie and Colin Morgan were spotted at the Oxegen Festival this past weekend. I tried to look for pictures, but so far there is nothing. If you find anything, please let me know! Thank you, Becky, for letting me know.

MTV presenter Laura Whitmore was among a host of stars who donned their wellies and joined thousands of revellers singin’ in the rain at Oxegen.

The blonde TV host was spotted backstage alongside RTE’s Dan and Becs, actress Holly White, and Colin Morgan and Katie McGrath, stars of BBC drama Merlin.

Irish Times: My Style

WHAT’S THE MOST YOU’VE EVER SPENT? This Balenciaga bag, which I bought in Paris with my first pay cheque, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever bought. It fits scripts inside, as well as being so simple. My mother bought the Hermès scarf (that’s on it) in Paris.

DO YOU LIKE SHOPPING? I hate shopping. I shop like a man. I can manage when I have to get something specific, but I can’t do aimless wandering around stores.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE It’s very relaxed. I wear what’s comfortable and I don’t like looking overstyled. I wear a lot of cashmere and very skinny jeans with loose tops because I like the contrast. I don’t like to look fitted all over, but to balance it out.

In the meantime, she’s still coming to terms with her newfound success. “My uncle called me up recently and said ‘Katie, I have a favour to ask.’ It turns out my little 10-year-old cousin is the biggest Merlin fan. So my uncle said, ‘Is there any way you could come over for dinner?’ So I said, ‘Of course’, and turned up and my cousin was just speechless with excitement. And then she was asking me all these questions about the show. It was like Christmas morning for her. It was really sweet, but at the same time, it was really strange. I was like, ‘I’m only your cousin!’ And at the end of the day, it’s just a job!”
